π€π But, of course, the main event today should be "We, robot" from Tesla, where they will finally present their robotaxi. Only the lazy hasn't commented on this topic. For example, Naval Ravikant: "Robotaxis are going to get shockingly cheap, especially during off hours."
For me, this is another opportunity to win a bet we made about 10 years ago, that we would be riding in robotaxis in 10 years. I think, with some stretch, I can already claim victory, although I haven't yet taken a ride around the city (not in a test environment).
The main intrigue and competition with Waymo lies in the technologies. Waymo uses expensive lidars, which makes each ride incredibly costly, while Elon Musk stated years ago that they fundamentally would not use lidar and that if a human can manage a car with just visual input, then AI should be able to do it with just cameras. This fundamentally reduces the cost of a ride, but on the other hand, it still doesn't match the quality.
And, of course, the race will be won by whoever has more data (until the government regulates everything and forces real-time data to be publicly accessible). Looking at the number of Tesla cars around and their speed of deployment, it's clear that Tesla has plenty of data.
In general, we are waiting for the event (starting at 7pm PST) and praying that NYC makes it onto the list of test cities (although, of course, these dreams are unfounded).
