The Issues of Pseudoscientific Ideas and Their Popularity

Discussing why pseudoscientific ideas are becoming popular, especially among women.

We discussed that there aren't many places in the world and online where provocative questions can be discussed. I want this blog to be one of those places. Last time, we pondered why some animals can be eaten while others cannot. Today, I want to touch on an even more complex topic.

It seems to me that pseudoscientific ideas are spreading at an incredible pace. Ideally, science, evidence-based medicine, etc., are gaining more and more facts, research methods are being refined, and everyone has access to studies with just one click – yet we constantly hear about esotericism, homeopathy, chakras, etc. Perhaps this is confirmation bias, but around me, I see more and more people turning to pseudoscientific directions, even among those who studied at the best technical universities and understand what a randomized placebo-controlled study is.

Speaking of religion, my observation shows that women believe in God more than men. When it comes to services in Christian churches, we see that most parishioners are usually elderly women.

When we talk about esotericism, astropsychology, chakras, etc., we often see that these are predominantly female profiles on social media.

I should note that if any aspect claimed by esoteric specialists is even attempted to be supported by scientific works, it piques my interest – sometimes I spend time studying these works. So far, in 100% of cases, it has either been a fabrication or a misinterpretation of what the scientist studied. A recent example is the “Bandura curve,” which coaches love to use; it turns out it has nothing to do with Albert Bandura. It was invented by a coach who refers to a book by Albert that doesn’t mention this curve at all and is actually about something entirely different.

So, the questions are:

Why is there such a gender split towards women?

Why is the overall popularity of this issue growing, despite the fact that it does not withstand any scientific criticism?

What are the consequences of the rise in popularity of pseudoscientific ideas?
