AI is increasingly becoming a part of all the tools we use daily. The first step everywhere seems to be adding a chat feature like ChatGPT. Obviously, this is not the best solution for most tasks.
The folks at shapeof.ai have compiled a library of UX patterns for AI: six categories ranging from Wayfinders (helping to start without a blank slate) to Trust Builders (watermarks, disclosure, data control).
Here are a few examples I liked:
- Inline Action - instead of a separate window, there's a "ask AI" button next to what's already on the page. The context is automatically pulled in, no need to copy-paste into a chat.
- Inpainting - select a piece of an image or text and ask to regenerate just that part. Like in Photoshop, but for any AI output.
- Madlibs - instead of an open prompt, a form with blanks: "write an email for [company] about [client's pain point]". Structured, repeatable, doesn't fall apart over long distances.
If you're building a product with AI, make sure to check it out.
