Interesting fact, but in the post-Soviet space, asking for a discount seems shameful, while in American culture it’s absolutely normal. That is, in the post-Soviet space, you can lose a few reputation points for asking, while in the USA, that’s definitely not the case; at worst, you’ll just get a refusal.
I periodically remember this and apply it again and again, with the result:

2. I practiced getting refusals - that’s useful too.
