Popular idea: calculators have made us unable to do mental math, GPS has killed navigation, and now artificial intelligence will finally dumb everyone down.
There is an interesting counterexample from the world of Go. From 1950 to 2016, the quality of human play changed very little. Then AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol - and the quality of human decisions sharply increased. Moreover, players began to develop moves that differed from both previous human and machine ones. Artificial intelligence did not replace creativity - it spurred it on.
I see this in my own children as well. They are not becoming passive consumers - they are using new tools as a springboard for their own curiosity.
