How AI Uncovered the Secrets of the Scrolls Destroyed by Vesuvius

Professor Brent Seales from the University of Kentucky is reading the Herculaneum scrolls using AI.

History isn't super fresh, but every time I stumble upon new details, it amazes me again and again.

Professor Brent Seales from the University of Kentucky is working on a project to read the Herculaneum scrolls, lost after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. These scrolls, resembling pieces of coal, cannot be physically opened without damage. The use of AI and micro-CT technology allows for 'virtual unrolling' of the scrolls and reading them without touching. As a result of the Vesuvius Challenge project, aimed at decoding texts without destruction, the first words have been revealed, including terms related to 'purple dye.'

Just imagine - it might be possible to extract knowledge that was considered irretrievably lost. Scientists started with a few words and expect to decode hundreds of scrolls in the coming years.
