Musk Quoted Cloudflare's Forecast on AI Traffic Growth

📡 Musk quoted Cloudflare's forecast: in five years, AI traffic on the internet will be 1000 times greater than human traffic.

At an internal SpaceX presentation (Musk holds these quarterly after earnings reports), he referred to a fresh forecast from Cloudflare: if the current growth continues, in five years, non-human AI traffic will be a thousand times greater than human traffic. "Let that sink in for a minute," he added.

The forecast is not baseless. On a Cloudflare call following Q2 2026 results (August 6, a day before Musk's presentation), CFO Thomas Seifert said almost the same thing: in five years, humans will become "a statistical error on the internet." He clarified that human traffic is not decreasing, it's just that non-human traffic is growing exponentially faster. CEO Matthew Prince added that the tipping point—when non-human traffic surpassed human traffic—was already reached in May 2026, 18 months earlier than their own forecast.

Currently, according to Cloudflare's blog, bots and crawlers already account for about 57% of requests to HTML pages, with humans at 42.5%. Of all crawler requests, 52% are for data collection for AI training, up from 22% a year ago.

An important nuance is that for Cloudflare, this includes all non-human traffic: search engine bots and security scanners are also included, not just AI agents acting on behalf of users. Seifert himself noted that this forecast has been revised several times—each time reality outpaced expectations.
