Marc Andreessen is the co-founder of a16z, one of the most influential people in tech. Any podcast featuring him is worth watching, and this one is no exception. Here are three interesting thoughts that stood out:
1. Mexican standoff in every team
You know the scene from westerns where three people stand with guns pointed at each other? This is what the situation looks like in teams right now:
- The programmer thinks: "With AI, I don’t need a designer or a manager"
- The designer thinks the same
- The manager does too
But no one notices that AI is standing off to the side with a grenade launcher, which could potentially be better than all three. It hasn’t yet, but the risk is there.
2. One skill is no longer enough
To be irreplaceable, you need to combine skills. Just being a programmer? Not enough. A programmer + a decent designer? AI enhances both skills and you win in the market.
3. AI can teach, not just do
For the first time, technology doesn’t just do something for you — it can teach you. Instead of "just do this for me," sometimes it’s worth asking: "spend 10 minutes, teach me how to do this myself." It’s important not just to use AI, but to understand how it works.
