A Few Side Thoughts

A few side thoughts on Burning Man principles and their application in real life.

A few side thoughts:

1) I still ponder how seemingly contradictory principles like Radical Self Reliance and Gifting coexist and create an interesting world.

2) Radical Self-expression certainly allows a vast number of unique and creative people to express their true selves. This applies not only to the beautiful art and incredible events created there but also to the irony over reality. For example, a huge sign saying 'No Dancing' in the middle of the most danceable zone or the constant irony over principles in 'real' life like Safety 3rd instead of Safety 1st, etc.

3) Inside Burning Man (and long before by various communities), many events and lectures explain these principles, what they mean, etc. Next year, I will definitely find time to attend such a lecture on the playa.

4) Of course, like any other principles, they are important not so much on paper (you can find them at this link https://burningman.org/about/10-principles/) but in the people who share and support them. It's incredible how this is possible in a community the size of a city with 80,000 people. By the way, for comparison, 80,000 people is the entire population of Santa Cruz, California.

5) Perhaps the biggest contemplation (not only for me, many talk about it) is that these principles can and should be applied in 'real' life. Currently, many events, companies, communities, etc., are being built on these principles. Of course, it's more challenging when others do not adhere to them, but I am 100% sure that everyone returns from Burning Man changed.
