Startup Colossal has announced de-extinction β three "puppies" of the dire wolf have been born: Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi. This is the result of large-scale DNA editing using CRISPR β scientists took ancient samples (up to 72,000 years old) and integrated genome fragments into the cells of a gray wolf.

The result is not the original species, but a hybrid: a functional analogue created from a modern wolf with parts of the dire wolf's DNA. This approach has sparked controversy. Critics remind us that dire wolves are not just large wolves, but a separate evolutionary line incompatible with modern surrogates. Even with perfect DNA, it wouldnβt be a "resynthesis of the species."

Nevertheless, the achievement is significant: over 20 point mutations in 14 genes, restoring traits β from fur to body size. Colossal calls this a "functionally equivalent species" β a biological reconstruction without claiming full identity.

The main question now is not about science, but about intentions. Is this Jurassic Park or a step towards saving endangered species?
