US Authorities Forced Anthropic to Disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5

US authorities forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 due to national security concerns.

⚡️⚡️⚡️ US authorities forced Anthropic to disable its two most powerful models - Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

On June 12, Anthropic received a directive from the government under export control: to close access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals - both inside and outside the US, including its own foreign employees. It is technically impossible to accomplish this without completely disabling the models for all clients, so Anthropic simply shut both down.

The reason is national security. The government learned about a way to bypass Fable 5's protection ("jailbreak"). Anthropic reviewed the demonstration and stated that the entire "hack" boiled down to asking the model to read the codebase and fix found vulnerabilities - exactly what other models can do and what cybersecurity specialists use daily.

Context: Fable 5 was released publicly just three days earlier, on June 9 - the first publicly available model from the Mythos family, which previously scared the industry with its superhuman ability to find and exploit vulnerabilities. To release it to the masses, Anthropic added safeguards: requests from high-risk topics (cybersecurity, biology) are silently redirected to the old Opus 4.8.

Anthropic complies with the directive but openly disagrees: withdrawing a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people due to one narrow vulnerability is an excessive measure. Access to the company's other models remains untouched.
