Waymo has presented fresh safety data for self-driving cars for 2024.

50 million kilometers without a human driver — and the results are impressive:

83% fewer accidents with airbag deployment

81% fewer accidents with injuries

64% fewer traffic incidents reported by police

What does this mean in practice? The Waymo Driver is already driving significantly safer than the average person — the car is less likely to be involved in serious accidents that cause damage or injuries.

A robot at the wheel is more cautious, predictable, and attentive than a live driver. If the main question used to be “how soon will self-driving cars catch up to humans,” now it sounds different: “how soon will humans give way to robots on the road?”
