Yannic Kilcher is a well-known ML researcher, engineer, and popular YouTube blogger on AI (if you’re not subscribed, I highly recommend it) who has finally reappeared in public after a month-long break. Before this, he was releasing detailed videos about the latest in the world of AI and ML several times a month.
His absence is explained by the fact that he spent the entire month working on his own project, OpenAssistant - an open-source alternative to ChatGPT.
As is well known, one of the key conditions for success in any ML project is a large amount of clean data. Language models (especially those built on RLHF) are no exception.
The team came together to build a tool where anyone can add answers and vote for others' answers, which will be used to train the model. Gamification, ratings, etc. are also used to motivate people to participate more actively.

God save open source as an ideology.
