An interesting experiment on defining "normality" was conducted by the famous Eliezer Yudkowsky. In short, he asked people to draw a picture, and then with each iteration, he said it was cool but asked them to redraw it to make it even more normal. The result was a sequence of images. It turned out to be a very symbolic transition from the current reality to the singularity.
