Hiring Developers Who Embrace AI

A discussion with an entrepreneur about hiring developers who embrace AI.

Recently, I was chatting with an entrepreneur who sold his business and is pondering his next idea and team.

One of the approaches they agreed upon with the technical co-founder is to hire only those developers who are not afraid of AI.

Let me explain what this means: these are developers who see tools like ChatGPT, Autopilot, and other LLMs not as a threat (oh no, we’ll all be fired), nor do they dismiss them (they’ll never replace us, I’ve tried it, it makes mistakes, it’s useless), but as new opportunities (with this tool, I can increase my efficiency by X times). It’s a matter of mindset.

I really liked this idea, and I’ve been returning to it periodically, and here’s what came to mind: a huge number of companies/startups give developers various leetcode tasks + system design questions during the hiring process. Both can be tackled more effectively with hints from ChatGPT. So the question is - if a person “cheats,” is that bad, or is it actually good, since it means they can apply AI at work.

And what if we reach a point where a person who doesn’t know how to program can pass coding and system design interviews with ChatGPT? What does that mean for the industry? Do we need to change the hiring process in some way?
