OpenAI begins showing ads in the free and cheap versions of ChatGPT. Prices are on par with NFL broadcasts, higher than Meta.

But there’s a catch: unlike Google and Meta, OpenAI currently doesn’t provide advertisers with detailed analytics. Only impressions and clicks—like TV networks. There’s no data on whether the ads led to purchases or other actions.

This works as long as demand exceeds supply. But over time, advertisers will start demanding sophisticated ad tech—targeting, conversions, attribution. This is what made Google and Meta the largest ad sellers over the last 20 years.

OpenAI’s goal is $11 billion in annual revenue from free ChatGPT users by the end of 2027. Advertising is a key part of this plan.
