Moderna and Merck announced the results of a melanoma vaccine trial—an aggressive form of skin cancer. The study involved 1,137 people who had already had their tumors surgically removed. Participants were divided into two groups: one received only the drug Keytruda, while the other received Keytruda plus the new vaccine. Those who received the vaccine experienced less frequent cancer recurrence and slower spread throughout the body. There were no side effects beyond what was expected.
The vaccine is personalized for each patient. After surgery, the specific mutations in the patient's tumor are identified, and a unique mRNA vaccine is created for that individual. The idea is that the immune system, after the injection, begins to search the body for cells with the same markers and destroys what remains of the cancer post-surgery. Similar vaccines have been tested before, but this is the first large-scale comparative trial.
The stock reacted much more strongly than the actual results might suggest. Moderna's stock surged by more than 100% at one point (Forbes reports a +124% increase), while Merck's rose by about 10%. However, the companies did not disclose any specific figures—such as the percentage reduction in risk or the length of time patients lived without recurrence. They only stated that both trial endpoints were met. Detailed figures are promised to be revealed later at a medical conference before the vaccine is submitted for approval.
